How to tell if your court needs resurfacing

We are often asked how often tennis courts need resurfacing and what the signs are that work needs to be carried out. The truth is that it depends on a number of factors – how well the court is maintained, the weather and general conditions surrounding the court, and how often the court is used. In general, courts may need to be resurfaced anywhere between every 5 and 10 years, but this can vary enormously. Here are four signs that probably mean you need resurfacing work.

Cracks are starting to appear

One of the most obvious signs that you need to get your court resurfaced is that cracks are appearing and the surface is breaking up. This could be caused simply by the surface wearing down through use or through damage from roots or other materials on the court. When you get cracks you should start to think about getting the court resurfaced.

Water stays on the court for a long time

Another tell-tale sign is that the court is not draining properly. Hard courts that are made from porous macadam should drain fairly quickly after rain, and you should not see pools of water from light rainfall. This points to serious problems with the surface, and it means that you need to get professionals in to sort it out as soon as possible.

Mould and mildew are showing

Mould and mildew are not only unsightly, but they also eat away at the court over time, and soon it will be impossible to play on. Additionally, these can be serious trip hazards on your court. So any time you can see organic material such as moss or issues like mould, you should consider resurfacing.

The paint is heavily faded

Another obvious sign is if the paint is heavily faded. We’re not just talking about the court lines, which can be repainted, but if the actual colour of the court has changed significantly, this is often a sign of deeper problems.
